Населяют леса и тундры. Живут группами. Убежищами служат норы и логовища, где рождаются весной от 3 до 12 волчат. Три-четыре недели волчица не отходит от малышей и ее кормит самец. Питается в основном животной пищей, но не отказывается и от растительной. Живут до 15-20 лет. 

Distribution: North America. A subspecies of the gray wolf. Unlike the latter, it more often has black coloration, but can also be reddish, gray, or white. Body length 1–1.5 m, weight up to 50–77 kg. Inhabit forests and tundra. Live in groups. Their shelters are burrows and dens, where 3 to 12 pups are born in spring. For three to four weeks, the female does not leave the pups and is fed by the male. Feed mainly on animal matter but also consume plant food. Lifespan up to 15–20 years.
